No. 13 Softball Knocks Off No. 10 Fresno State, 5-4 To Begin The Kia Klassic With A 2-0 Record

March 14, 2002

FULLERTON, Calif. - The 13th-ranked Washington softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie, defeating 10th-ranked Fresno State, 5-4, late Thursday night in first day action at the Kia Klassic. The Huskies, who also defeated Utah 4-0, moved to 23-7 overall and 2-0 in tournament play after avenging a 2-0 loss to Fresno State (23-7) earlier this season.

Against Fresno State, the Huskies were pumped early as UW sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) pounded a one-out triple into the right-center gap. After UW junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) walked and stole second, catcher Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) took advantage of a deep Bulldog defense, lofting a single to shallow center field, scoring both Roach and Clark for the 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs got one back in the second when pinch hitter Lashme Gomez lined a two-strike change-up just out of the reach of Husky third baseman Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.). An inning later, Fresno pulled even at 2-2 by stringing together four straight two-out singles.

After both teams' early offensive output, neither was able to push across any runs through the next two frames. The Huskies, who were outhit 13-7, broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth when Clark scored from second on a shallow single to right field by sophomore Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.).

The UW kept the pressure on in the sixth as sophomore Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) came through with a clutch RBI single, scoring two runs to give the Huskies a 5-2 lead into the top of the seventh.

Fresno attempted to rally back in its last at-bat, making the game interesting by scoring two runs before UW pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) got the last batter to bounce into a fielder's choice out at second base. Bollinger moved to 9-3 in 2002 with her fifth complete game of the season.

In the first game of the day, the Huskies scored two runs in the first and sixth innings to defeat Utah 4-0 for the second time this season. Washington tied a school record for stolen bases in a game with seven, as Clark and Oleson each stole two and senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) and sophomores Owen and Roach recorded one stolen base apiece.

In the first inning, the UW capitalized on four Utah errors, as Clark and freshman Rivera both scored on a pair of throwing errors from catcher Bryanne Durance.

The Huskies would later add two insurance runs in the sixth, when Oleson led-off the inning with her first home run of the season, slapping a four-bagger to center field. Owen, who singled and stole second, tallied the final run of the game on an RBI single which dropped in shallow center field from freshman Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.).

Freshmen pitcher Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) and Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) combined for the shutout, allowing five hits. Boek earned her then team-best ninth win in 2002 to move to 9-1, striking out four in five innings, before giving way to Scott, who got out of a jam in the sixth to earn her first career save.

Washington continues with day two action of the Kia Klassic Friday with its final pool play game versus Louisiana-Lafayette at 11 a.m.
