No. 7 Cal Defeats San Jose State, Miami in Capital Classic
March 14, 2002
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Seventh-ranked California (25-8) swept through the first day of the Sacramento Capital Classic, defeating San Jose State (10-18), 6-1, in extra innings before shutting out Miami (OH) (3-15), 9-0, in a game cut short due to the run rule. For the second consecutive week, the Golden Bears dispatched the Redhawks in five innings.
In the opening game, Cal scored five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Spartans after tying the game in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior Roni Rodrigues scored the game-winning run after moving to third on Courtney Scott's sacrifice bunt . Rodrigues then scored on freshman Chelsea Spencer's double to center field. SJSU put itself into a deeper hole committing two errors to keep the inning alive for the Bears.
The Spartans took the 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning on the strength of Elisa Barrios' home run over the left field fence. It looked as though another unranked team would hold on for a one-run win against senior pitcher Jocelyn Forest and the Bears, but Cal brought in the tying run when freshman Jessica Pamanian got on base with an infield single. She advanced to second when Kaleo Eldredge reached base on an SJSU error. Junior Kristen Morley hit an RBI single to left field to knot the score, 1-1.
With the exception of the round-tripper, senior pitcher Jocelyn Forest threw another gem, striking out 13 batters in her 11th complete game of the season. She walked none and allowed just two hits, one of which was the homer.
The Bears collected their 25th win of the season against Miami. Cal scored at least one run in every inning, including four in the fourth inning and two in the fifth and final inning. Freshman Jessica Vernaglia (2) and juniors Courtney Scott (2) and Veronica Nelson (5) hit home runs for the offensive explosion.
Freshman Kelly Anderson, who pitched a school record 30 innings in a high school game at the same softball complex a year ago, struck out five, walked one and scattered three hits in five innings for her fourth win of the season.
In the second day of the Sacramento Capital Classic, the Bears face Kansas, Friday at 9 a.m. on field 2 and Syracuse at 1 p.m. on field 1.
