Gymnasts Just .025 Away From Tying No. 5 Michigan

March 16, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 14th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team had a season-best 196.675, just narrowly missing out on an upset over No. 5 Michigan at the Shanico Inn-vitational on Saturday. The Wolverines finished the competition with a 196.700, good enough to win the meet. No. 22 Michigan State took third with a 195.050, while Seattle Pacific placed fourth with a 192.000.

'Our athletes always get really pumped up for this meet. It's the end of the season and they always go out and enjoy themselves,' said coach Tanya Chaplin. 'They also can get used to having four events going at the same time. That will happen in postseason, and this helps them get ready for that.'

Individually, the Beavers took top honors on three events. Annie Campbell won floor with a career-best 9.975, and she tied her career-high on beam with a 9.925 to tie Michigan's Elise Ray for first place on that event. Lindsay Nelson also won her first collegiate event title by turning in a career-high 9.925 on her vault. Even more impressive about Nelson's victory was that she was performing that particular vault for the first time in competition. She did a yurchenko layout half after competing a yurchenko layout for most of this season and all of last season.

Campbell and Nelson took second and third in the all-around, both finishing behind Ray. The 2000 U.S. Olympian scored a 39.650 to win the all-around, while Campbell posted a season-high 39.575 - good for the eighth best all-around score in OSU history. Nelson added a career-best 39.275 to take third.

The Beavers had season-highs on three of the four events, including a 49.075 on vault - OSU's first 49-plus score of the year on that event. Nelson's 9.925 led the way, while Campbell placed fifth with a 9.85. Tanya Ricioli and Thrse Videan tied for eighth with a pair of 9.80 vaults, and Meghan Jones had a career-high 9.70 to round out the scores the Beavers counted.

Every Beaver in the bars lineup scored a 9.825 or better as OSU posted a season-high 49.300 on the event. Elizabeth Jillson tied her season-best with a 9.925 to place second behind Ray's 9.95, while Jerra Lopez tied for third with a 9.90. Nelson's 9.85 earned a share of fifth place, and Campbell, Ricioli and Heidi Goehring all scored a 9.825.

Beam gave the Beavers some problems, but the team still managed a 48.750. Campbell tied for first with her third 9.925 of the season and fifth of her career, while Lopez scored a career-high 9.90 to tie for third. Daylee Ingalls chipped in a 9.75 to tie for seventh, and Nelson scored a 9.675. Still, Elaine Yoder had a fall and the Beavers had to count a 9.50 after Ricioli had a near fall.

OSU closed out the night with a season-high 49.525 on floor, with no Beaver scoring below a 9.80. Heather Justus opened with a 9.80 to tie her career-high, with Nelson following at 9.825. Videan matched her career-best with a 9.875, and Ricioli tied her season-best with a 9.90. Lopez tied for second with a 9.95, setting the stage for Campbell. She needed a perfect 10.0 to give the Beavers a tie with Michigan, and she nearly did so. One judge gave her the perfect mark, but she got a 9.95 from the other to settle for a 9.975 - still a career-best.
