March 17, 2002

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters took two of three games from California with a 7-3 win Sunday at Anteater Ballpark to close the series.

The Golden Bears opened the scoring in the first when first baseman Conor Jackson singled in center fielder David Nicholson, but UCI brought nine batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning against Cal starter Joe Todoroff. The Anteaters scored four runs on a wild pitch, an RBI single by designated hitter Jaime Martinez and a fielder's choice by second baseman Effren Trejo.

UCI then added a run in the fifth with an RBI single by right fielder Chris Klemm to score Trejo.

Anteater starting pitcher Paul French got the win to improve to 3-3. The junior left the game after six innings, striking out five and allowing a run on four hits.

Cal got two more runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI double by second baseman Conor Jackson off of reliever Glenn Swanson to cut the lead to 7-3. However, Swanson retired the next two batters to end the rally.

With one out, Cal loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but Swanson struck out catcher Chris Grossman and left fielder Ben Conley to end the game and get his first save of the season.

California's Todoroff fell to 0-2 after giving up four runs on four hits in 1/3 inning.
