AUSTIN, TX - Thu-Sat., Mar. 21-23 at NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving ChampionshipsJamail Texas Swimming Center, Austin, TX, Prelims 11 a.m. daily, Finals 7 p.m. daily

BEARS HEAD TO NCAAS: The No. 3 ranked California women's swim team (7-2) heads to Austin, TX, to participate in the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships after placing fourth at the Pac-10 Championships (1096 points) Feb. 28-Mar. 2 in Long Beach, CA. The NCAA meet will begin on Thursday, Mar. 21 and will conclude Saturday, Mar. 23. Prelims will be held at 11 a.m. daily with finals beginning at 7 p.m. daily. The Bears will send 10 swimmers-one senior, four juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen, to the championships to compete in 17 of 18 swimming events. Full meet results will be available each day at websites: www.ncaachampionship.com and www.TexasSports.com.

HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever, the 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, is in her 10th season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has an 85-37 (.697) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 139-59 (.702) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). In the last five seasons, she has led Cal to a ninth place NCAA finish in 1997, a eighth place finish in 1998, a fifth place finish in 1999, a fourth place finish in 2000 and a seventh place finish in 2001.

COUGHLIN FINALIST FOR SULLIVAN AWARD: Natalie Coughlin, a sophomore swimmer at Cal, has been named one of the five finalists for the 72nd Annual AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award that recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation. Over a five-day span earlier this fall, Coughlin won nine events and in the process set two world records, four American records and six meet records. At the FINA World Cup in East Meadow, NY, Nov. 27-28, she broke the 100 (57.08) and 200 (2:03.52) short course meters world records in the backstroke. In the 50 fly (25.83), Coughlin broke the American and US Open record. She then traveled to the Texas Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Austin, TX and broke the American record in the 100 back (50.90) and posted times that lead the nation in the 50 free (22.21), 100 free (47.76), 200 free (1:43.77) and 100 fly (51.22).

ADDITIONAL COUGHLIN NOTES: Last season, Coughlin was the third consecutive Bear women swimmer to be named Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year (Marylyn Chiang in 1999, Haley Cope in 2000, Coughlin in 2001). She went on to be the 2001 NCAA Swimmer of the Year after breaking NCAA records in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 100 flay, and helping the Bears to NCAA runner-up finishes in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 free relay. At the 2002 Pac-10 Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 2 in Long Beach, CA, Coughlin was the conference champion in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 free and helped the Bears to Pac-10 titles in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. If Coughlin wins the Sullivan Award, she would be only the 10th swimmer to receive the honor in the award's 72-year history.

BEARS AMONG NATION'S BEST: Coughlin currently has the nation's top collegiate times in seven events - the 50 free (22.21), the 100 free (47.76), the 200 free (1:43.30), the 100 back (50.71), the 200 back (1:50.76) and the 100 fly (51.22). She has the nation's second-best time in the 200 fly (1:54.55) and fourth-best time in the 200 IM (1:57.54). Other Bears with times among the Top 10 in the nation include junior Olympian Staciana Stitts in the 100 breast (fourth 1:00.51) and the 200 breast (sixth 2:11.98), senior Alice Henriques in the 100 back (ninth 54.18) and sophomore Kyoko Yokouchi in the 200 back (ninth 1:57.22). In the relays, Cal has the second-best time in the nation in the 200 medley relay (1:39.20 Coughlin, Stitts, Henriques, junior Michelle Harper), fourth-best time in the 400 medley relay (3:37.07 Henriques, Sitts, Coughlin, sophomore Danielle Becks) and fifth-best time in the 200 free relay (1:30.47 Stitts, Coughlin, Becks, Harper).
