Cats Shutout Simon Fraser in Softball Exhibition Game

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 3 ranked Arizona softball team defeated Simon Fraser University on Wednesday night, 9-0.
The Cats loaded the bases in the first inning when junior Lovie Jung was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a single by freshman Allyson Von Liechtenstein. Sophomore Mackenzie Vandergeest moved the runners' one base when she drew a walk off Simon Fraser pitcher Erin Thomas. Sophomore Leneah Manuma hit a two-run single to center field that allowed Jung and Von Liechtenstein to score. UA pitcher Jenny Gladding knocked in the final run of the inning when she grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Vandergeest.
Arizona didn't add to their lead until the fourth inning when freshman Carrie Hagen singled to center field, scoring freshman Jackie Coburn from third base. Coburn had reached on a single and advanced to third on a single by senior Meaghan Finnerty.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman Rebekah Quiroz reached base on a single and Vandergeest walked. Manuma then hit a three-run homer over the right field fence to push the Cats lead to 7-0.
The last runs for Arizona came in the sixth inning when freshman Crystal Farley singled to left field. Jung knocked Farley in with a two-run homer over the left field wall to extend the lead to 9-0.
Gladding finished the game with five strikeouts and allowed only one hit before being relieved by senior Jennie Finch in the fourth inning. Finch threw three innings allowing one walk and no hits.
The Cats next play Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in Rita Hillenbrand Stadium.
