Former Player Terri Cox Named Assistant Volleyball Coach
March 21, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Former Sun Devil volleyball standout Terri Cox has been named the new assistant coach at Arizona State as announced by head coach Patti Snyder-Park. Cox, who played for ASU from 1994-97, comes to ASU after spending the last year as the assistant coach at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
'I am extremely excited to return to the program where I played and have the opportunity to coach a great group of players,' said Cox. 'You always have a special bond with the school you played for and it is a dream come true for me to be back here in a coaching capacity.'
Cox, a native of Long Beach, Calif., is a 1998 graduate of ASU with a degree in English. She will serve as ASU's second assistant, sharing recruiting duties and on-court skill development with another former Sun Devil All-American, Christine Garner. Cox will specifically work with outside hitters and defense, both areas where she excelled as a player. Prior to coaching at Texas Tech, Cox led Xavier Prep (Phoenix) to back-to-back appearances in the Class 5A Arizona High School State Championship, including winning the title in 2000.
'It is a great opportunity for ASU volleyball to be able to bring back another outstanding All-Pac-10 Alumnae. Terri is outgoing and personable and those attributes will help her in her relationship with both the current ASU players and future recruits,' added Snyder-Park. 'She still has the ability to get out on the court and show her stuff which will give her instant credibility. Terri will also bring some great recruiting skills to the program as she is still networked in the high schools and club ranks in the Valley since her successful stint as head coach at Xavier Prep High School, but also in Southern California (hometown) and Texas, which are recruiting hotbeds.'
As a four-year starter at Arizona State, Cox ranked in the top 10 in several categories, finishing her career with 1,185 kills (9th) and 1,382 digs (3rd). She is only one of eight players in ASU volleyball history to record 1,000 or more digs and kills in a career. Cox was an all-Pac-10 performer in 1996 when she recorded 441 kills (10th most in ASU single-season history) and 426 digs (7th most in ASU single-season history).
Cox officially starter at ASU March 1 after former Associate Head Coach Scott Swanson left to take the head coaching position at UTEP. She has a three-year-old daughter (Justine Spann) and is engaged to former Sun Devil football player Creig Spann.
