Beavers' Winning Streak Ends At Five

March 22, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's five-game winning streak came to an end Friday afternoon as the Beavers fell to Cal State-Northridge 4-3 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (13-8 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning, but the Matadors (17-8, 0-0 Big West) scored twice in the eighth to take the lead for good.

The Beavers, who lost for just the second time in their last 11 games, and CSUN continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, OSU gained its 3-0 lead on just one hit - an infield single by Jason McBride - and took advantage of a pair of CSUN errors, two wild pitches and a passed ball. But Matador lefthander Bill Murphy retired the next 16 Beaver hitters, eventually finishing with a three-hitter and striking out 14.

'We just didn't do a good job of making adjustments at the plate,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I don't think we responded to the challenge. We didn't play the type of game we're able to play. This is a big series for us, and we need to play much better to beat good teams.'

Murphy, expected to be a high-round selection in this year's Major League Baseball draft, improved his record to 6-1 and lowered his earned run average to 2.68. Still, it looked like the Beavers might hand him his second loss of the season until the top of the eighth inning.

OSU reliever Jake Postlewait, in his fourth inning of work, sandwiched a walk between a pair of outs in the top of the eighth. The Beavers brought on closer Jared Sanders to face righthanded-batting Rudy Simpson and Sanders induced a grounder, but it went through the left side for a hit. Adam Nikolic then punched a double down the leftfield line to score both runners.

Oregon State threatened to tie the game in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Kerisi Reynolds reached second with one out but was stranded there. In the ninth, Andy Jarvis singled with one out, but Paul Richie grounded into a forceout and pinch hitter J.R. Runyon struck out to end the game.

Richie had a career-best 10-game hitting streak end on Friday. Besides the hits by McBride and Jarvis, OSU got a two-out single by Will Hudson in the seventh.

The Beavers made some tough plays to hold their lead until the eighth inning. Oregon State starter Ben Rowe allowed a run in the third to make it 3-1, then left the game with none out and the bases loaded in the fifth. Postlewait got a double play that allowed one run to score, then fanned Aaron McKenzie to retire the side with OSU still leading 3-2.

In the sixth, Eric Verbryke reached third with one out and the Matadors tried to squeeze him home. Nikolic's bunt was fielded by charging OSU third baseman Brian Barden, who tossed to catcher Richie in time to tag Verbryke and preserve the lead.
