Bruin Results After First Day of NCAA Swimming Championships

After the first day of competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Austin, TX, the Bruins are in 21st place with 15 points. Leading the team standings is Auburn, with a one-day total of 153 points.
In the first day of competition, Bruins competed in the 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 400 Medley Relay. The 200 Medley Relay team of Sara Platzer, Erica Shugart, Malin Svahnstrom and LeAnne Cadag was disqualified. In the 500 Free, Jackie Lobdell placed 38th in the preliminaries with a time of 4:51.06 and did not advance to the finals. In the prelims of the 200 IM, Malin Svahnstrom was 15th (2:00.40) and advanced to the finals, Jen Noddle was 41st (2:03.25), Cathy Coler was 45th (2:03.52) and Leslie Hovsepian was 58th (2:04.80). In the 200 IM finals, Svahnstrom placed 13th (2:00.26).
In the prelims of the 50 Free, Platzer was eighth (22.73), advancing to the finals, and Shugart was 41st (23.30). In the finals of the 50 Free, Platzer finished eighth (22.62 - season best) and earned her sixth All-America honor. In the 400 Medley Relay preliminaries, the team of Cadag, Elvira Fischer, Katie Younglove and Svahnstrom placed 18th in a time of 3:44.29, but did not advance to the finals.
On Friday, the Bruins will compete in the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 800 Free Relay and three-meter diving. The championships will conclude Saturday, March 23.
