UCLA Wins 10th Pac-10 Gymnastics Championship

Stanford, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team captured its 10th Pac-10 team title, scoring a 197.625 to place first at the conference championships at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus. Junior Onnie Willis won the all-around with a 39.625, and sophomore Jamie Dantzscher was selected as the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year.

The Bruins began the meet on the vault, where they scored a 49.275. Willis led the Bruins with a 9.95, and Jeanette Antolin contributed a 9.9.

UCLA was superb on the uneven bars, posting a season-high 49.65 to hold a two-event total of 98.925. After Malia Jones led off with a 9.8, and Kristin Parker followed with a 9.875, the Bruins received four consecutive scores of 9.925 or higher. Willis, Dantzscher and Doni Thompson each scored 9.95, which was good for first-place, and Antolin, filling in for an ill Yvonne Tousek, recorded a career-high 9.925.

Moving on to beam, Thompson led off with a season-best 9.875, Dantzscher (9.8), Jones (9.775), Willis (9.8), Parker (9.8) followed with solid scores. Anchor Alyssa Beckerman closed the set with a meet-high 9.9.

Needing a 48.975 on floor to overtake Arizona, who posted a final score of 197.05, the Bruins got off to a good start, as freshman Michelle Conway opened with a career-high 9.85. Jones added a 9.825, Parker scored a season-best 9.925. Beckerman recorded a 9.875, and Willis clinched the team title for the Bruins with a 9.925. Dantzscher put the icing on the cake with a first-place score of 9.95, giving UCLA a 49.525 on floor and a team total of 197.625.

UCLA (19-5) will next compete at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday, Apr. 6. Meet location will be announced on Monday, Mar. 25.
