Beavers Win Series Finale

March 24, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State finished its non-league baseball series with a 14-3 win over Cal State-Northridge on Sunday afternoon. Earlier in the day, CSUN had beaten the Beavers 10-4 in the completion of a game that had been suspended due to rain Saturday afternoon.

OSU (14-9 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) will play Portland on Monday at 2 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, making up a game that had been rained out earlier this season. The Beavers will then open their Pac-10 schedule against Arizona with a three-game series Thursday at 2 p.m., Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the series finale, Pat Stevens' two-run double ended the game due to a 10-run rule being used to allow Cal State-Northridge (18-9, 0-0 Big West) to leave Corvallis in time to catch its flight home. Stevens' hit capped an eight-run eighth inning that included J.R. Runyon's three-run homer to left-center.

'I thought our guys did a nice job of coming back and winning the third game,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'It's tough to lose the first two games of a series and stay focused, but our guys did a good job of that this afternoon.'

Mark McLemore earned the first pitching win of his Oregon State career, going five innings and allowing one run (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out four. In his first two-plus seasons, the junior lefthander had lost his first five decisions as a Beaver, last week, he'd pitched his best game at OSU in receiving no decision against Washington State.

'Mac deserved that - he's earned it,' Casey said of the long-awaited victory.

The Beavers also got a big day from Runyon, a junior college transfer making just his second start at second base after back problems had sidelined him early in the season. Runyon was 3-for-4 at the plate on Sunday, and in the field he made three leaping stabs of line drives that appeared headed into right-centerfield. The last of those came in the top of the fifth and started an inning-ending double play with OSU clinging to a 3-1 lead.

'I get three of those, and only one ground ball - that never happens,' Runyon said. 'It was fun ... it's coming along, and I'm starting to feel more comfortable. It's just a matter of getting games in and playing some innings.'

Runyon has homered in both games he's started this season, the first was against Washington State on March 17.

Brian Barden was 3-for-5 for OSU in the final game of the series and drove in three runs, while Tom Creighton was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored and Will Hudson was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Wick Udy, another junior college transfer, had his first home run as a Beaver.

Jake Postlewait earned his first career save. The sophomore lefty pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one after entering the game with OSU up 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

Sunday's win provided OSU a chance to get itself headed in the right direction again following the two losses to Cal State-Northridge. OSU had won nine of its previous 10 games going into the weekend.

'We pulled together, and it was good to get that one to carry on into next week and the start of league play,' Runyon said. 'We pulled it through.'

In the completion of Saturday's suspended game, Cal State-Northridge broke open what had been a 3-2 game when Rudy Simpson drove a three-run homer to left in the top of the fifth inning. The Beavers got back within 6-4 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Matadors got a solo homer from Simpson in the top of the eighth and added three runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

Andy Jarvis was 2-for-3 with his second homer of the season for OSU and Hudson was 2-for-3. Stephen Copeland, OSU's starter on Saturday, took the pitching loss for his three innings of work before the rains set in.
