Beavers Top Portland 5-2

March 25, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Pat Stevens tripled home the tying run and then scored the go-ahead run on Seth Pietsch's double in the sixth inning as Oregon State beat Portland 5-2 in non-league baseball Monday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (15-9 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) have won 11 of their last 14 games going into the start of Pacific-10 play.

OSU will host Arizona to start the conference season this Thursday at 2 p.m., with the series continuing Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Stevens finished Monday's game 2-for-3, adding a run-scoring single in the seventh inning as the Beavers scored a pair of insurance runs against the Pilots (8-13, 2-4 West Coast). That gave the senior outfielder three hits in OSU's last two games, he had a two-run double that ended OSU's 14-3 win over Cal State-Northridge on Sunday.

Stevens had arthroscopic knee surgery just before the season opened. His knee has felt fine for a while, but he had only two at-bats prior to this past weekend.

'We've got so many hitters on this team, you've just got to wait your turn and make the most of your opportunity,' said Stevens, who batted .333 last season. 'I'm starting to get my timing down and my swing is starting to feel pretty good.'

OSU was trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth against Portland. With one out, Andy Jarvis singled to right, Stevens followed with a line-drive triple to left-centerfield to drive in the tying run. One out later, Seth Pietsch yanked his 13th double of the season down the leftfield line to score Stevens for a 3-2 lead.

Oregon State finished its scoring in the eighth after J.R. Runyon began the inning with a double off the left-centerfield fence. With one out, Brian Barden lofted a double to centerfield that sent Runyon only to third as he had to see if the ball would be caught. After Jarvis walked, Stevens blooped a single over third base to score Runyon, and Wick Udy followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Mike Ekstrom, Ty Kline, Don Stykel and Jared Sanders combined to pitch a seven-hitter for the Beavers. Kline earned the win for his 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four.

Sanders earned his sixth save of the season, giving him sole possession of second place on the school's all-time list of season leaders, he trails only Mike Boire's eight saves in 1997. The sophomore righthander also moved into a tie for third on the Beaver career saves list with six.Barden added a 2-for-4 day for OSU, giving him five hits in the Beavers' last two games. The two hits against Portland also moved him into a tie for fifth place on OSU's list of career hits leaders with 185.

Brock Griffin was 2-for-4 for Portland. Kyle Corra took the pitching loss, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Portland took a 1-0 lead without a hit in the third inning, as Matt Allen walked and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches. Oregon State tied the game in the fifth when Pietsch was hit by a pitch and scored on Tom Creighton's single to left-center, but the Pilots regained the lead in the top of the sixth on Kory Casto's leadoff homer to straightaway centerfield.
