Bruins Sweep Bulldogs in Final Non-Conference Games
March 25, 2002
LOS ANGELES, CA - The top-ranked Bruin softball team improved its non-conference record to 32-3 on Monday afternoon, posting a doubleheader sweep over No. 10 Fresno State. UCLA won the first game 1-0, and posted a 7-0 win in the nightcap. UCLA will return to action on Friday afternoon in Seattle, WA, when the Bruins open Pac-10 play with Friday and Saturday games against Washington.
The first game of the day was a pitchers duel between Bruin sophomore Keira Goerl and Bulldog freshman Jamie Southern, as the two teams combined for four hits in the game. The Bruins scored their lone run of the game in the third inning, when senior Crissy Buck became a lead-off baserunner when she was hit by a pitch. After Erin Rahn came in to pinch-run, Rahn advanced to second and then third on two sacrifice bunts, and would score on a single to right field by Amanda Freed.
That was all the offense Goerl would need, as she struck out eight batters and allowed just one hit, a double by Southern in the second inning. Goerl is now 15-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Bruins scored early and often, with Amanda Freed also recording a shutout, scattering five hits. UCLA opened its scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when Amanda Freed reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball before coming home on a Claire Sua double down the left field line. A pair of runs would score in the third, fourth, and sixth inning, capped by a two-run home run by Tairia Mims in the sixth to complete UCLA's seven-run offensive outing. The Bulldogs used four pitchers in the game.
UCLA returns to action on Friday, March 29, with its Pac-10 opener in Seattle, WA. The Bruins and Huskies will play on Friday and Saturday in the opening weekend of conference play for both teams.
