Cougs Drop Games to Cal, Washington
March 25, 2002
LEWISTON, Idaho -- - California pushed across single tallies in the ninth and tenth innings to hand Washington State a 6-5 loss in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Monday at Harris Field. Then, in a non-conference game, the Cougars fell to Washington 7-3, completing the rare two-team double header.
The Bears' Matt Brown (3-1) picked up the California (19-11, 3-0) win in relief, while Billy Gorrell (0-3) took the loss for WSU (10-14), also in relief.
After dropping all three conference games to California, including Monday's game that was rained out Sunday, the Cougars took on Washington in the first of two games that do not count in league standings. The win for Washington (10-8-1) went to starter Shawn Kohn, who worked the first six innings. Marshall Hendon (0-1), the second of four Cougar pitchers, took the loss.
WSU appeared ready to pick up its first Pac-10 win and snap a six-game losing streak in the opener Monday. The Cougars carried a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning and had two outs on the Bears with Matt Einspahr on second base.
Jeff Dragicevich hit a sharp grounder down the third base line that could have been the third out had Jeff LaRue been able to field the ball cleanly, but he didn't and as the grounder scooted past him Einspahr raced home with the equalizing run.
Then, in the tenth, Carson White drilled a two-out home run over the center field fence, staking the Bears to a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the tenth, Bookie Gates walked to open the inning and after Wes Falkenborg popped up to short right field, Jeff LaRue doubled to right center. Gates tried to score on the play, but a perfect relay throw from second baseman White to catcher Creighton Kahoalii gunned down the Cougar runner for the second out. Pinch hitter Robert Stahlke then had a chance to bring home LaRue, but his line drive toward right field was speared by Conor Jackson at first, ending the game.
The first five hitters in WSU's lineup each drove home a run against California, with Mike Andrusco, Gates, Falkenborg and LaRue each collecting two hits.
Andrusco's second hit, a single in the sixth, plated one run, while Henderson's fifth inning single also scored one run. Gates drove home his run in the third with a single to center, while Falkenborg drove home a run in the fifth when he picked up his second single.
LaRue also drove home a run in the fifth with a single as the Cougars tallied three times to take a 4-2 lead.
In the nightcap, Washington overcame WSU's 1-0 lead with two runs in the third, only to have the Cougars add another run for a 2-2 tie after three frames. Washington came back with single tallies in the fourth and sixth inning for a 4-2 lead. Both teams pushed across single runs in the seventh, followed by a two-run Washington tally in the eighth that ended the scoring.
In the first inning Evan Hecker scored WSU's first run on a LaRue flyout to right field, while a bases-loaded walk to Jon Baeder pushed Collin Henderson home in the third inning. WSU's final run came in the seventh when Justin Hart walked and scored on a double to right field by Hecker.
Kyle Larsen and Jay Garthwaite did the heavy damage for Washington, each driving home two runs. Larson had a run-scoring double in the third and a solo home run in the eighth inning, while Garthwaite homered in the seventh and doubled home another run in the eighth.
WSU and Washington conclude their two-game series Tuesday with a 2 p.m. game at Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark State.
