McMurren Pitches No-Hitter As Ducks Sweep UNLV
March 26, 2002
EUGENE - Oregon senior Connie McMurren added her name to an elite list Tuesday afternoon, throwing the first no-hitter of her career and the 12th no-hitter in Oregon history as the Ducks defeated UNLV 5-0 in the second game of a doubleheader at Howe Field. Oregon sophomore Anissa Meashintubby was also solid on Tuesday, pitching her third shut out of the season to lead Oregon to a 1-0 win in the first game.
'We had tremendous pitching today and I think we've really turned the corner and are ready for Pac-10 play,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'These were great performances by both pitchers and I'm very pleased with how we played today.'
Oregon had just three hits in the first game and five in the second, but all were critical, timely shots that broke the games open for the Ducks at the right time. Game 1 was tied 0-0 through four and a half innings, but Amber Hutchison singled to left field in the bottom of the fourth to lead off Oregon's offense. Alyssa Laux and Lynsey Haij bunted on consecutive at bats to advance Hutchison to third base and Janell Bergstrom's sacrifice fly scored Hutchison. Haij finished the game 2-for-3 to lead all Oregon hitters.
With the win, Meashintubby improves to 7-2 on the season and has a team-high 1.70 ERA. She had zero walks and struck out seven.
In the second game, McMurren had six strike outs and five walks, but never allowed the Rebels to get a hit. It is the first no-hitter by an Oregon pitcher since Bethany Smith (now Bidwell) threw a no-hitter versus Simon Fraser in 1997.
Oregon got on the board early in this game when Jenn Poore homered over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning. It was her second home run of the season. Oregon attacked again in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring two runs in each to expand the lead to 5-0. Bergstrom singled in the fourth and was driven home by a Kristi Hall home run over the right field fence. In the fifth inning, Alyssa Laux tripled to score Hutchison and later scored on a passed ball.
Oregon will open Pac-10 play this Friday in Corvallis versus Oregon State.
