March 26, 2002
AUSTIN, Tex. - California's women's tennis team suffered its third defeat of the season today at the hands and rackets of the higher-ranked Texas Longhorns at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin. With the 5-2 loss, the Bears drop to 9-3 on the season, and will prepare to open Pac-10 play on Friday against Washington State.
In doubles action, Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs got the better of Longhorn duo Kaysie Smashey and Lindsay Blau on the second court, doubling up the Texas combo 8-4. Court number one held the key to the doubles point, but Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt could not hold on, suffering only their second defeat of the season as they fell, 9-7.
Texas dominated the singles portion of the afternoon, with three Bears defeated in straight sets. Catherine Lynch and Jieun Jacobs were the bright spots for Cal, both winning in straight sets. Lynch has performed particularly well in the first half of the season, having lost only one match on the fourth court. Jacobs has held strong for the Bears on court No. 2, and won today in a pair of 6-4 sets.
On Friday, Cal travels to Washington State to open up Pac-10 play. The Bears will remain in the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, traveling west to take on Washington on Saturday. Cal returns to Hellman next weekend.
