BEARS HEAD TO NCAAS: The No. 4 ranked California men's swim team (6-2) heads to Athens, GA, to participate in the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships after placing second at the Pac-10 Championship (708.5 points). The NCAA meet will begin on Thursday, Mar. 28 and will conclude Saturday, Mar. 30. Prelims will be held at 12 p.m. with finals beginning at 7 p.m. daily. The Bears will send 12 swimmers-five seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen, to the championship to compete in 15 swimming events. Complete meet results will be available each day at the following websites: www.ncaachampionships.com or www.georgiadogs.com.

HEAD COACH NORT THORTON: Nort Thornton, the 1999 Pacific-10 Coach of the Year, is in his 28th season as Cal's head men's swim coach. Thornton, the dean of the Pac-10 swimming coaches, has a career dual meet record of 200-79 (.717) with the Golden Bears and his squad finished eighth at the 2001 NCAA Championships. Thornton led Cal to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980.

BEARS AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: The No. 4 ranked California men's swim team finished in second place (708.5 points) at the 2002 Pac-10 Swim Championships, trailing only No. 1 ranked Stanford (918). The Bears were led by freshman Duje Draganja, who was the Pac-10 champ in the 100 free with a time of 42.82. Other highlights for Cal was winning the conference title in the 400 free relay (2:51.08, senior Mattias Ohlin, Draganja, senior Matt Macedo, junior Anthony Ervin) and placing second in the 400 medley relay with a school record time of 3:09.92 (sophomore Alex Lim, junior Daniel Kim, Ohlin, Ervin). Alex Lim also established a new school record with a time of 46.13 in the 100 back, swimming the lead-off leg of the 400 medley relay.

ANTHONY ERVIN: Cal junior Anthony Ervin, the 2000 Olympic gold medallist in the 50-meter free, captured two titles at the World Swimming Championships this past summer in Fukuoka, Japan. He won the 50-meter free in 22.09 over Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands (22.16). Ervin then upset van den Hoogenband and Australia's Ian Thorpe to win the 100-meter free in 48.33. Ervin's time of 48.33 broke the American record of 48.42 set by Bear legend Matt Biondi in 1988.

BEARS AMONG NATION'S BEST: The Bears, as of Mar. 11, have five swimmers - junior Olympian Anthony Ervin, sophomore Alex Lim, freshman Duje Draganja, junior Joe Bruckart and senior Mattias Ohlin - who have times that are in the Top 10 in the nation. Cal also has three relays that are in the nation's Top 5. Ervin, who won a gold medal in the 50-meter free at the Sydney Olympics, has the nation's second-best time in the 50 free (19.43) and the sixth-best time in the 100 free (43.07). Lim, the MVP of the 2002 Dallas Morning News Invitational, has the nation's second-best time in the 100 back (46.13) and the fifth-best time in the 200 back (1:42.85). Draganja, an Olympian from Croatia, has the nation's top time in the 100 free (42.58) and fifth-best time in the 50 free (19.61). Bruckart has the nation's sixth-best time in the 200 IM (1:46.05) and ninth-best time in the 200 free (1:35.87). Ohlin has the nation's 10th-best time in the 100 fly (47.39). Cal is in the Top 5 in the 400 free relay (first 2:51.08), 200 free relay (second 1:17.72) and the 400 medley relay (second 3:09.92) as well.

The Bears have finished in the Top 10 nationally 22 of the 27 years they have been coached by Nort Thornton.
