Eight Bruin Women Earn Academic All-MPSF Indoor T & F Honors

Led by sophomores, sprinter Nicole Gaskins and pole vaulter Gail Larsen, UCLA's women's track and field team had eight student-athletes earn Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) indoor track and field honors.
Gaskins (3.883 cumulative grade point average) and Larsen (3.881) led the Bruin contingent.
Also earning MPSF All-Academic honors were - junior pole vaulter Karen Bewley (3.357), junior middle distance runner Tiffany Burgess (3.053), junior distance runner Kelly Grimes (3.309), sophomore middle distance runner Lena Nilsson (3.099), junior shot putter Chaniqua Ross (3.298) and senior pole vaulter Heather Sickler (3.500).
At the 2002 MPSF Indoor meet, held Feb. 22-23 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, the Bruin women, with a partial squad, placed second with 117 points, behind winner Arizona (137).In the meet, Gaskins placed ninth (56.57) in the 400m, Grimes was eighth (10:54.85) in the 3000m and fifth (18:57.91) in the 5000m and Larsen was 14th (11-9.75) in the pole vault.
To qualify, a student-athlete must - have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically, have completed one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and have competed in fifty percent or more of the institution's competition in the student-athlete's respective sport (indoor track and field).
