Cougar Tennis Loses to No. 6 Stanford
March 28, 2002
Lewiston, Idaho---The No. 37 WSU women's tennis team lost to the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal 7-0 Thursday at the Lewis-Clark State indoor tennis facility.
Poor weather forced the match to Lewiston, and the Cougars just could not get warmed up enough to beat the Cardinal.
Stanford opened the match by winning all three doubles matches and the doubles point. Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna, the Cougar duo ranked 16th nationally, lost to Stanford's No. 2 Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. WSU's Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez came up short against Stanford's No. 10 Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette at No. 2 doubles, losing 8-3. Cougars Orsolya Sallai and Zorana Roganovic lost to Cardinal Keiko Tokuda and Story Tweedie-Yates 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
'We competed extremely well today against a very tough opponent,' said WSU coach Cari Groce. 'They just played better at the bigger points today. I'm excited how we're playing right now, and I have a lot of confidence in our team heading into tomorrow's match against Cal.'
The win dropped Washington State's record to 7-6 and 0-2 in Pac-10 competition.
The Cougars return to action Friday at noon against the No. 20 California Bears. The match is scheduled to be played in Pullman at the Stadium Way Tennis Center but will be played in Lewiston if the weather does not cooperate.
