Huskies Take Charge at Oregon Duck Invitational

March 28, 2002

LEBANON, Ore. - Washington claimed four of the top six individual places and sprinted to a 16-stroke lead after the first day of the Oregon Duck Invitational, played Thursday at the 5,975-yard, par-72 Mallard Creek Golf Course.

UW's Lindsay Morgan was tied with Washington State's Kim Welsh for second at 2-over 146 after rounds of 74-72. Three Huskies were tied for fourth at 147, including Louise Friberg, Kelli Kamimura and Michelle Grafos.

San Francisco's Susannah Laing grabbed the individual lead after posting a 143 that included the lowest round of the day - an aftenoon 70 - at Mallard Creek.

Idaho was 16 strokes behind Washington at 602, followed by San Francisco at 605, Minnesota at 611, San Jose State at 612 and Washington State at 613. Oregon is 12th at 624.

Senior Kathy Cho was tied for 22nd at 152 to lead the Ducks, while sophomore Lacy Erickson was tied for 32nd at 155.

Oregon's Johnna Nealy was disqualified in the first round after failing to assess a two-stoke penalty for lifting and cleaning her ball from the rough on the fifth hole. Including the two stroke penalty, Nealy's score would have been a 76, eight strokes better than Kim Melrose's 84 that the Ducks were forced to count. The disqualification cost Oregon four places in the second round standings. The Ducks would have been tied for eighth with Nevada at 616.

The tournament concludes with a final round Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
