Cougs Split DH With Pace
March 29, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University baseball team took half of a rare scheduled doubleheader against Pace Friday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars defeated the Setters 10-4 in the opener, with Pace winning 10-8 in the nightcap.
With the split Friday, WSU (12-16) won the series 2-1. Pace returns home 3-15.
In the first game, the Cougars used a four-run eighth inning to stretch a 6-4 lead to an eventual 10-4 win. Jeff LaRue went 4-for-5 with a solo home run in the third inning and drove in two runs. Wes Falkenborg had a three-run homer in the decisive eighth frame.
In game two, four errors and a solid outing by Pace starter Keith Makowski (1-1) - who pitched a complete game, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs - did in the Cougars, who fell 10-8.
In the opener of the doubleheader, WSU starter Garrett Alwert went seven innings, scattering 13 hits and four runs to improve to 2-1 on the season. Billy Gorrell notched his first save of the season, while Setters ace Joe Magri (2-1) took the loss.
WSU got out to an early lead of the opener when LaRue's single to left field scored Hecker to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Pace responded by scoring two runs in the top of the second, but WSU countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, when Mortimer scored on a double Hecker and followed by scoring on a single by Hart. The Cougars added runs in the third on LaRue's third homer of the season and two more in the fifth on a Mortimer single that plated LaRue and Jon Bader.
The Setters responded with two runs in the seventh off Alwert, but WSU answered with a four-run eighth, powered by Falkenborg's third round-tripper of the season and a Hecker RBI double that scored Mortimer. Gorrell pitched two no-hit innings to earn the save.
In the rubber match of the three-game series, the Cougars started six reserves and fell behind late after leading 7-3. Makowski fended off a WSU rally in the ninth to receive his first win of the season. Brandon Hundt (4-2), the third of four pitchers the Cougars used, got the loss.
Pace got to starter Bryce Chamberlin early, scoring a run in the first and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead and chasing him from the game. WSU got its two early runs in the second on a David Eno RBI double that scored Grant Richardson and a Hecker single that scored Eno.
The Cougar bats erupted in the fourth, tallying five runs for a 7-3 lead. Bookie Gates started the scoring with an RBI single that scored Brandon Reddinger. Then, with the bases loaded, Robert Stahlke hit a triple that cleared the bases. Stahlke then came home on a Bruce Jacobsen single to give WSU a 7-3 lead.
The Setters responded by notching a run in fifth on a solo home run by Mike Bohlander and then scored four runs in the sixth on two-RBI doubles by Shelby Langford and Keith Carolan off Hundt, giving Pace an 8-7 lead.
Pace scored two more in the eighth on a throwing error by Hundt and a fielder's choice. WSU answered in the ninth with an RBI double by LaRue that plated Richardson. But with men on second and third, Mortimer struck out to end the game.
Up next for the Cougars is a three-game set with Pac-10 rival Arizona State. First pitch of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, April 5.
