NCAA Grants USC Tailback Malaefou MacKenzie Extra Year Of Eligibility

March 29, 2002

LOS ANGELES-USC tailback Malaefou MacKenzie has been granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA and will return to the Trojans for his sixth season in 2002.

MacKenzie, who has 765 rushing yards and 4 starts in his Trojan career, did not see any action last season. He missed USC's first 2 games of 2001 with a right knee sprain, the third while attending his father's funeral in Western Samoa and the next 2 after re-spraining his knee in practice. He then returned to Western Samoa for the rest of the season to assist his family.

MacKenzie, who saw action in 1997, 1999 and 2000, redshirted in 1998 because of a knee injury. Because he was out of action for 2 seasons due to 'medical or extraordinary circumstances,' the NCAA allowed a year's extension of the normal 5-year eligibility 'clock' (an athlete can compete 4 seasons within a 5-year period).
