Nine Cougar Swimmers Garner Pac-10 Academic Honors

March 29, 2002

PULLMAN--Junior Jill Olson and sophomore Theresa Dunn earned Pacific-10 Conference First Team All-Academic honors, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday.

'It's important for the swimming program to maintain its strength in the classroom,' WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. 'I commend these women for their accomplishments.'

Olson, a native of Seattle, carries a grade-point average of 3.74 while majoring in accounting. She recorded an 18th-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle at the Pac-10 Championships this season, an event in which she holds second place on WSU's all-time list. Olson also holds the school record in the 1,000 freestyle and sixth all-time in the 500 freestyle. This marks the second consecutive year she has been named to the Pac-10 first team.

Dunn has compiled a 3.94 GPA and is pursuing a major in pre-law. The native of Morgan Hill, Calif., placed 25th in the 100 backstroke and 34th in the 200 backstroke at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships.

Junior Melissa Hubley and sophomores Katie Byrnes and Rachel Dong garnered All-Academic Second Team honors.

Hubley, a team co-captain this season, maintains a GPA of 3.40 as a sociology major. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native placed 10th in the 200 butterfly and 16th in the 100 butterfly at this year's Pac-10 Championships. She holds the WSU record for the 200 butterfly and second all-time in the 100 butterfly. Hubley has been named to the Pac-10 second team for two straight years.

Byrnes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) carries a 3.74 GPA and holds positions on three of WSU's top-10 lists for individual events. Byrnes placed 20th in the 100 and 200 backstroke at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships, both events in which she holds second place on the school's all-time lists.

Dong, a native of Paramount, California, has compiled a 3.59 while majoring in movement studies. She recorded WSU's best finish at the Pac-10 Championships this season with her fifth place effort in the 100 butterfly. Dong qualified for the NCAA Championships where she placed 34th in the 100 butterfly and 38th in the 100 breaststroke. Overall, she holds positions on WSU's top-10 lists for six events, including a school record in the 100 butterfly.

The five Cougars honored between the first and second teams is the most in school history. In the past five years under the direction of Aceto, Washington State has had six athletes earn first team honors, eight earn second team honors and 29 receive honorable mention.

Other Cougar honorees include juniors Rebecca Cohen (Portland, Ore.) and Sara Schmied (Woodinville, Wash.), and sophomores Nicole Chinn (Seattle) and Sasha Taylor (Smiths Falls, Ontario), who all earned honorable mentions.

To be eligible for the Pac-10 All-Academic team athletes must have a class standing of sophomore or older.
