No. 12 Softball Falls In Pac-10 Opener To No. 1 UCLA, 2-0
March 29, 2002
SEATTLE - UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl threw a one-hitter and the Bruins scored a single run in the first and sixth innings to defeat Washington, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Pac-10 Conference action at Husky Softball Stadium. With the loss, the 12th-ranked Huskies fell to 29-9 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10, while the top-ranked Bruins improved to 33-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The UW managed just one hit in the game - a season low - as Jamie Clark (Tustin,Calif.) broke up Goerl's no-hit bid with a lead-off single through the left-side in the bottom of the seventh. Clark's hit extended her current hitting streak to a career-best 13 games, while it also kept alive the junior's streak of consecutive games on base, improving to 48 games.
The UCLA offense, meanwhile, scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the first inning as leftfielder Stephanie Ramos' bases-loaded single up the middle drove in junior Natasha Watley. The Bruins later added an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI double from rightfielder Crissy Buck.
Washington pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) took to loss to fall to 12-5 in 2002. Bollinger allowed just five hits, walking four and striking out three, before giving way to relief pitcher Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) with one out in the sixth.
Goerl, meanwhile, finished with six strikeouts and two walks to improve to 16-2 this season.
Washington and UCLA will be back in action again Saturday for a single game beginning at 2 p.m., at Husky Softball Stadium.
