March 29, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - A pair of runs in the first inning proved to be all that the No. 14 ranked Oregon State University softball team needed, as the Beavers won their Pacific-10 Conference opener, 2-0, against University of Oregon on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, Oregon State improves to 27-9 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10 while Oregon falls to 18-10 and 0-1 in conference action.
'It was a hard-fought game,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was a good win for us to open up Pac-10 play.'
The runs were the only of the contest as OSU hurler Kristen Hunter matched her season-high with eight strikeouts and pitched her second complete game shutout of the season.
Hunter kept the Duck batters on there heals, throwing a no-hitter over the first five innings of action.
'Kristen Hunter threw a great game which really made the difference for us at keeping their offense at bay,' said Walker.
Alyssa Laux and Lakeesha Eversley picked up hits for Oregon in the sixth inning but Hunter retired the side in order during the seventh.
The Beavers earned six hits on the afternoon but left runners stranded on base in five innings.
'We didn't take advantage of some of the opportunities that we had, but I felt like it was a better offensive output than we've had in several weeks,' said Walker.
The Civil War series continues on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
