March 29, 2002
MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team pulled off an upset Friday afternoon, taking down No. 22-ranked Florida International 4-3 at University Park.
'It's a great win for us. They just beat a top 10 team (No. 9 Tennessee) last week,' Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'It will be huge when it comes to NCAA Tournament time. It was an unbelievable team effort.'
Oregon junior Monika Gieczys played - and won - the deciding match at No. 3 singles against Florida International's Maria Montoya, with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 triumph.
'Monika really turned it on in the third set and just grinded it out,' Griffin said.
The Ducks also received singles victories from Janice Nyland at No. 2, Vickie Gunnarsson at No. 5 and Courtney Nagle at No. 6. Oregon dropped the doubles point, but sophomores Nagle and Davina Mendiburu defeated the No. 27-ranked duo in the nation, Anneliese Rose and Cristina Campana, 8-4, at the No. 1 position.
Oregon improved to 10-9 on the season while the Panthers fell to 15-4.
The Ducks take two weeks off before traveling to Louisiana State on April 13 and Tulane on April 14.
