March 29, 2002
Pullman, Wash.---The No. 37 Washington State women's tennis beat the No. 20 California Golden Bears 5-2 at the Stadium Way Tennis Center Friday.
Washington State opened the match by winning two-of-three doubles matches and the doubles point. Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna, the Cougar duo ranked 14th nationally, clinched the doubles point for Washington State by defeating the No. 44 combo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
'Perkins and McKenna are doing well together,' said WSU Head Coach Cari Groce. 'They have a very unique style. Erica is a good net player, and Stacy likes to win points on the baseline. It's working for them.'
Cougars Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez won their No. 2 doubles match over Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs 8-6. Washington State's freshmen doubles team of Orsolya Sallai and Zsofia Fodor came up short against Cal's Carla Arguelles and Catherine Lynch 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Perkins, a senior ranked 50th, clinched the match for the Cougars by beating No. 42 Kops-Jones 6-3, 7-6 (3) at No. 1 singles. The win improved Washington State's record to 8-6 and 1-2 in Pac-10 competition. The match was the first match the Cougars have played in Pullman this season.
