Arizona Track & Field Distance Runners Earn Qualifying Times at Stanford Invitational

March 30, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams sent six athletes to compete at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The primary goal was to get some of the distance runners to meet NCAA and Pac-10 qualifying standards. The Arizona women reached that goal by having all three runners earn NCAA provisional qualifying times in their respective events. The Wildcat men did not meet NCAA qualifying standards, but all three runners did qualify for the Pac-10 Championships.

The Arizona women were represented by Beth Hoge and Tara Chaplin in the 5,000m and Kim Bates in the 10,000m. Hoge finished the 5,000m race in 16:24.89 to claim eighth place along with her NCAA provisional qualifying time. Chaplin finished lower than expected in 19th with a time of 16:40.88, but she did meet the NCAA provisional qualifying time. Kim Bates finished the 10,000m in 35:00.53 to earn her NCAA provisional qualifying time.

On the men's side, Mark Anderson and Steve Smith represented the Wildcats in the 3,000m Steeplechase, while Tom Prindiville was the lone Wildcat in the 5,000m. Anderson finished in tenth with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 8:58.06. Smith completed the race with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 8:59.22. In the 5,000m, Prindiville was second in his heat with a time of 14:08.40, which is a Pac-10 qualifying time.

The full Wildcat track and field squads will reconvene on Saturday, April 6 at the California vs. Arizona Challenge. It will be the first head to head competition against two other Pac-10 schools (Stanford and UCLA).
