March 30, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Freshman Joey Metropoulos hit his fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot to left as part of a six-run sixth inning Saturday and the USC Trojans completed the Pac-10 Conference series sweep with a 13-9 win against the California Golden Bears. Senior Bill Peavey reached base on a fielder's choice before Metropoulos by beating out a throw on a possible double play.
Metropoulos went 3-for-5 with the home run and two RBI and is now batting .378 on the season. Peavey went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
USC is now 15-13 overall and leads the Pac-10 Conference with a 3-0 record. California falls to 19-14 on the season and 3-3 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans have won 14 straight against the Golden Bears at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans took a 4-1 lead after the first inning. Shortstop Michael Moon singled while center fielder Brian Barre reached on a catcher's interference called against California's Creighton Kahoalii. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by California starter Matt Brown and scored when Peavey hit a two-run single to center with two outs. Peavey advanced to second on an infield single by Metropoulos and scored when Nick Mosich hit a ground ball to third baseman David Nicholson that was overthrown at first. Metropoulos would score later on a passed ball by Kahoalii.
Both teams battled to a 6-6 tie before California took an 8-6 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Ben Conley and RBI double by Conor Jackson.
In the Trojans' sixth inning, Moon singled followed by walks to Barre and catcher Alberto Concepcion to start the six-run rally. Moon went 4-for-5 on the afternoon (all singles) while Concepcion went 0-for-3, snapping his team-high hitting streak at 14 games.
Cory Campos (1-1) picked up the win in relief, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Jordan Olson picked up his first save of the season for the Trojans with 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
USC will host UC Irvine in non-conference action on Tuesday (April 2) at 5 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. The game will be broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on www.usctrojans.com.
