Beavers Blank Arizona 5-0

March 30, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four Oregon State pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Beavers beat Arizona 5-0 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Andy Jarvis' two-run homer capped a three-run first inning for OSU (17-10 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) and Tom Creighton homered for the second straight day.

Mark McLemore, Ty Kline, Jake Postlewait and Jared Sanders teamed up for the shutout in front of a crowd of 1,184. Oregon State, which took the final two games of its three-game series against the Wildcats (21-12, 2-4), has won 13 of its last 17 games.

OSU plays host to Portland in a non-league game Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The Beavers then visit Southern California for a Pac-10 series next Friday through Sunday, that series can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

'Getting two out of three is important, espcially heading to USC next weekend,' Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. 'Our pitching was outstanding this weekend from the fourth inning of the first game on. We were in pretty bad shape after three innings two days ago (trailing 10-0 in Thursday's series-opener), but we said then that it's a three-game series ... this was a good team win, and it was a good series to start the Pac-10 season.'

OSU pitchers allowed just four runs and 16 hits over the final 24 innings of the series, including one run on 11 hits in the final 18 innings. Kline was credited with the win Saturday after relieving McLemore in the fifth inning.

'Those guys have been great,' Jarvis said of the Beaver pitching staff. 'You know somebody is going to come in and get the job done day-in and day-out. The tempo of the game makes a big difference when you're on defense. It helps the whole thing keep going and that snowballs through the team.'

The Beavers again turned in several tough defensive plays to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

For the second straight day, freshman centerfielder Aaron Mathews made a diving catch in the right-centerfield gap and it helped short-circuit an Arizona rally in the first inning. In the second, with a runner at second and one out, third baseman Brian Barden snared a shot off the bat of Jeff Van Houten, his throw found second baseman Creighton just as he ran across the bag to catch the runner by a half-step for an inning-ending double play.

In the third, with a runner at third and two out, shortstop Will Hudson timed his leap to snag a line drive from Brian Anderson and end the inning. In the fifth, Creighton jumped to flag down a ball hit by Brad Hassey that was headed for rightfield, in the sixth, leftfielder Seth Pietsch made a running shoetop catch in left-center.

'Aaron Mathews - how many great catches did he make this weekend?' Jarvis said. 'Seth Pietsch? And the left side of our infield may be one of the best in the Pac-10.'

Jarvis gave the Beavers momentum in the bottom of the first inning. Barden's sacrifice fly had put the Beavers up 1-0 with two out, then Jarvis drove a no-ball, two-strike pitch from Kaiser over the rightfield fence for a 3-0 lead. It was Jarvis' third homer of the year, all of them coming in the past three weeks, since March 16, he has raised his batting average from .239 to .280.

'It's just becoming more mature, growing up,' Jarvis said. 'You go 0-for-3 or 0-for-4, and you don't get as worried about it. You just go one at-bat at a time. You do what it takes to help the team - move runners over with a groundball, drive someone in by getting a fly to the outfield.

'Think that way, and the individual things will take care of themselves.'

That's an attitude that's helped OSU win consistently over the past five weeks while no Beaver has put up spectacular numbers.

'We're pretty close as a team,' Jarvis said. 'We've got a lot of juniors who have been together for three years, and the younger guys have bought into what's going on here. Our coaches have high expectations for us, they believe we can compete in the Pac-10 and they expect us to, and we believe we can compete in the Pac-10.'

OSU bumped its lead to 4-0 when Creighton homered to right to start the bottom of the third inning. After not homering in his first 25 games (all starts) as a Beaver, Creighton has homered in back-to-back games after his game-ending homer in Friday's 2-1 win.
