California Wins Ninth Straight
March 30, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's tennis team won its ninth-straight game today, routing the Oregon Ducks, 7-0, at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley this afternoon without losing a match. With the win, the Bears improve to 13-3, and close out their March slate undefeated. The win also propels Cal to 2-0 in Pac-10 play, with the Bears having yet to lose a point since the conference slate began on Friday.
Chase Exon and Conor Niland highlighted Cal in doubles, doubling up Oregon's Chris King and Manuel Kost, 8-4, on the third court. Ben Miles and Balazs Veress settled into the top court, throttling Ducks Oded Teig and Sven Swinnen, 8-2.
While the Ducks did not win a match in singles play, three courts went into the third set, with Oregon refusing to go quietly. After Wayne Wong took care of Swinnen on the third court, 6-2, 7-5, Robert Kowalczyk and Mik Ledvonova closed out their matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. However, the Ducks continued to battle hard, with Veress and Exon needing third sets to finish off Kost and Dubourdieu, respectively. Challenging the shutout was Teig, fighting with Niland at the second spot. With the third set at 5-3, Teig won two straight sets to send the match into extra games. Niland, a freshman from Ireland, dominated the last two games, emerging with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Cal, which has enjoyed seven of their last eight matches at home, will hit the road next weekend to take on UCLA and USC in Los Angeles. Both matches will count in Pac-10 play.
