Bruins Fall To Long Beach State, 4-3
April 2, 2002
LONG BEACH - Paul McAnulty hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Long Beach State a 4-3 victory over UCLA at Blair Field this evening. The Bruins drop their fifth in a row to fall to 13-17, while the Dirtbags improve to 19-9.
UCLA got on the board in the top of the first. Ryan Ramsussen led off with a single, and avoided a tag by the shortstop on a stolen base to advance to second. He moved to third on a Chris Jensen ground out, and scored on Ben Francisco's sacrifice fly. Josh Arhart doubled to the gap in right center, and scored on Wes Whisler's double that bounced off the wall in left center.
Long Beach State scored its first run in the bottom of the second off of Bruin starter Mike Kunes. The Dirtbags tied it up in the bottom of the fourth.
Francisco scored UCLA's third run of the game in the fifth inning. After singling to the third baseman, Francisco stole second base, and scored on Arhart's RBI single.
McAnulty drove home Long Beach State's third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single. The game remained scoreless until the ninth when he delivered the home run. UCLA could only manage three hits in the final four innings of play off the strong 49er relievers. UCLA's six relief pitchers combined to allow just three hits after the third inning, but combined to walk five batters.
Billy Susdorf (0-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning, but allowed the game winning home run on the first pitch of the ninth inning.
The Bruins open conference play this weekend when they travel to California for a three game series with the Golden Bears. Chris Cordeiro will be on the mound for UCLA on Friday afternoon. All three games can be heard live on uclabruins.com.
