USC UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE STANDINGS AFTER FIRST PAC-10 SERIES
STANFORD, UCLA PLAY FIRST LEAGUE GAMES

STANFORD is No. 2 in all polls this week after going 2-1 against No. 11 Texas ... ARIZONA STATE moves to No. 19 in the Baseball America poll, while Collegiate Baseball ranks the Sun Devils No. 20 and Baseball Weekly at No. 14 ... The Cardinal and Bruins play their first Pac-10 games on the road this weekend. Stanford takes on ARIZONA, while UCLA visits CALIFORNIA ... The Sun Devils play at WASHINGTON STATE, while USC hosts OREGON STATE ... WASHINGTON plays a non-conference weekend series at Missouri.

2002 TEAM NOTES

ARIZONA (21-12, 2-4)
Last Week: at Oregon State W 13-9, L 1-2, 0-5 This Week: *Stanford
The Wildcats dropped their second straight Pac-10 series, losing two of three games at Oregon State ... Arizona has struggled on the road this year, winning just two of 10 games away from Sancet Field. The 'Cats did break a six-game road losing streak with a 13-9 opening win at OSU ... SR SS Brad Hassey did well in the Wildcats' lone victory over the Beavers, going 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI. SO 2B Moises Duran also had a good day at the plate, rapping out three hits and adding three runs and two RBI. Eight of the nine Arizona starters on offense collected at least one hit in the game and seven scored at least one run ... ... SR LF Justyn St. Clair leads the 'Cats with a .326 batting average, while FR RF Jeff Van Houten is pacing the team in doubles (8), home runs (6), slugging percentage (.563) and is tied for first with 25 RBI. Hassey leads the squad in hits (42) and stolen bases (10) and is tied for tops on the team with 30 runs and 25 RBI ... Sophomores LHP Joe Little, and right-handers Marc Kaiser and Sean Rierson each have five wins apiece.

ARIZONA STATE (20-10, 4-2)
Last Week: Washington L 11-14, W 8-3, 13-6 This Week: at UNLV, *at WSU
ASU dropped its first game against Washington, but won the next two en route to its second straight Pac-10 series win ... The Sun Devils are 18-5 at home ... SO RHP Mike Esposito had one of ASU's best pitching performances ever when he struck out 17 batters in a complete-game victory over Washington Friday night. His 17 K's were the sixth most in a single game in ASU history and the most since 1997. He owns a team low 2.53 ERA and is 6-3 with 58 strikeouts in 57.0 innings pitched. He also earned Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week ... SO 1B Jeremy West leads the Sun Devils with eight home runs this season. After adding two against the Huskies last weekend, he has 14 career round-trippers ... ASU has 18 total home runs on the season, matching their total from all of last year ... Next up for the Sun Devils is a midweek game at UNLV before playing six straight Pac-10 games on the road, starting in Pullman to face Washington State this weekend. Last season, ASU took two of three games from WSU, outscoring the Cougars 19-9.

CALIFORNIA (19-14)
Last Week: at USC (L 3-11, 1-9, 9-13) This Week: Santa Clara, *UCLA
Cal was swept last weekend at USC. The Golden Bears have dropped 14 straight games at Dedeaux Field ... Despite the losses, several Cal players did well in the batter's box. SO 1B Conor Jackson was 6-for-8 with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI. He currently leads the Bears in batting average (.424), hits (53), home runs (11), RBI (42), slugging percentage (.792) and on-base percentage (.503) ... FR leadoff hitter, David Nicholson chipped in four hits in the series, adding a double and two runs scored ... Cal's pitchers had trouble against USC's hitters, as the team gave up 27 earned runs ... SR RHP Trevor Hutchinson continues to lead the pitching staff with a 6-3 record and 66 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched. He is 1-1 in Conference action with 14 K's in 14.1 innings pitched ... The Bears host a midweek game against Santa Clara before taking on UCLA. Last season, Cal swept UCLA in Los Angeles.

OREGON STATE (17-10, 2-1)
Last Week: Arizona (L 9-13, W 2-1, 5-0) This Week: Portland, *at USC
Oregon State took its first Pac-10 series, defeating Arizona 2-1 at home ... Four Beaver pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout in the final game, marking OSU's first blanking of a team this season. JR RHP Ty Kline was credited the win after allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. He also tossed two innings of one-hit ball in the Beavers' 2-1 win over the Wildcats ... JR 3B Brian Barden was a star at the plate last weekend, hitting .545 (6-for-11) with three doubles, one home run, two runs scored and four RBI. He leads the team with 41 hits, five home runs, 27 RBI and a .560 slugging percentage. He currently stands in third place on OSU's all-time hits list with 191 ... OSU is close to holding the first ever night game in the 96-year history of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Lights were installed at Goss Stadium on March 26 and 27 and the first night game is slated for sometime in April ... OSU plays Portland in a midweek game before heading south to take on USC.

STANFORD (19-6)
Last Week: Texas (W 7-6, L 0-2, W 7-2) This Week: San Francisco, *at Arizona
This week marks the first time this year that Stanford has fallen from the top spot in the Baseball America poll. The Cardinal is currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation ... Stanford extended its regular season series win streak to 10 in a row with a 2-1 win over Texas last weekend ... The Cardinal has won six of their last seven games ... JR LF Jason Cooper saw his career-high 15-game hitting streak come to end in Stanford's loss to the Longhorns. SR 2B Chris O'Riordan is currently riding a 10-game hitting streak ... The Cardinal received strong outings from JR LHP Tim Cunningham and SO RHP John Hudgins. Cunningham allowed no runs and struck out eight batters through nine innings, but came up with a no decision in Stanford's lone loss to Texas. Hudgins earned Saturday's win after allowing two runs on five hits with seven K's in his first career complete game. It also marked the first complete game of any Stanford pitcher this season ... Stanford is 10-2 at home, but will take its show on the road with its first Pac-10 series of the season at Arizona this weekend. The Cardinal also hosts a midweek game against the Dons of San Francisco.

UCLA (13-16, 0-0)
Last Week: no games This Week: at Long Beach State, *at California
UCLA returns to action after playing no games last week. The Bruins will visit No. 14 (Baseball America poll) Long Beach State Tuesday, before heading up the coast to play California ... SO Casey Janssen has been a solid performer for UCLA this season. The RHP/INF leads the team in ERA (1.80) and strikeouts (40) and has contributed at the plate with a .271 average, three home runs and 13 walks in 85 at-bats ... FR Wes Whisler is another two-way player that is playing well for the Bruins. The lefty has started five games this season, and has been the No. 1 starter of the last three series. He is hitting .284 with three home runs ... Head coach Gary Adams is just three victories away from 1,100 wins in his coaching career. Earlier this season he reached his 900th win at UCLA.

USC (15-13, 3-0)
Last Week: California (W 11-3, 9-1, 13-9) This Week: UC Irvine, *Oregon State
USC overcame its struggles at home by sweeping Cal in its first Pac-10 series of the season. The Trojans have won 14 straight against the Golden Bears at Dedeaux Field ... FR DH Joey Metropoulos did well against the Bears hitting .538 (7-for-13) with a home run and four RBI. The designated hitter leads the team with a .676 slugging percentage ... After playing their first 22 games on the road, the Trojans are 3-3 at home and continue on their 10-game home stand with a midweek contest against UC Irvine and Pac-10 weekend series versus Oregon State. USC needs just one win to record its 600th victory at Dedeaux Field. Deadeaux Field opened in 1974 and the Trojans are 599-263-1 (.695) at their home facility ... LHP Matt Chico notched 13 strikeouts in his outing against the Bears. He allowed two runs on four hits, earning his fourth win of the season. He leads all Trojans with 46 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched.

WASHINGTON (12-10-1, 1-2)
Last Week: at WSU (W 18-12), at Arizona State (W 14-11, L 3-8, 6-13) This Week: Gonzaga, at Missouri
Washington's Jay Garthwaite earned his second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor this season. The junior center fielder hit .500 (11-for-22) in five games last week. He knocked out two doubles and four home runs, scored eight times and notched 16 RBI. He has hit homers in five of the last six games and six of the last eight, and leads the team with nine total. His 16 RBI in five games represents more RBI than all but one of his teammates has compiled all season. He is tied for first in the Conference with 42 RBI ... JR SS Tila Reynolds has hit safely in 22 of 23 games this season and is currently on a nine-game hit streak after opening the year with a 13-game streak. He leads the team with a .408 batting average, 40 hits, eight doubles and 11 stolen bases ... Despite losing their first Pac-10 series, the Huskies did come away from ASU with one win, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Sun Devils ... Next up for UW are non-conference games against Gonzaga and Missouri.

WASHINGTON STATE (12-16, 0-3)
Last Week: Washington (L 12-18), Pace (W 13-4, 10-4, L 8-10) This Week: *Arizona State
Washington State lost a slugfest (18-12) to Washington, but pounded out a season-high 19 hits against Husky pitchers. The Cougars fared better against Pace University winning two of three games and outscoring the Setters 31-18 ... JR 3B Jeff LaRue and SR CF Evan Hecker did well at the plate last week. LaRue hit .700 (7-for-10) with two doubles, one home run, three runs scored and four RBI, while Hecker hit .667 (8-for-12) with three doubles, six runs and four RBI ... WSU finishes its 11-game homestand this weekend against ASU.
