Women's Soccer Announces 2002 Schedule; North Carolina Coming to Eugene
April 3, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon women's soccer coach Bill Steffen announced the 2002 schedule Wednesday, which features a non-league match in late September against 16-time NCAA champion North Carolina at Pape' Field.
The Ducks' schedule features other challenging non-conference teams along with the always difficult Pac-10 Conference competition. Pape' Field also will introduce fans to four night matches - the first against Eastern Washington on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. - as new stadium lights will be added before the season begins.
Oregon opens the campaign Aug. 30 against Wake Forest at Tallahassee, Fla. The Ducks then will take on host Florida State on Sept. 1. Oregon's first home match is Sunday, Sept. 8, vs. Gonzaga. That will be the beginning of 10 straight matches in Oregon, as the Ducks play seven at home, two in Corvallis and one at Portland. The Oct. 6 match at Portland will be the second 2001 Final Four team Oregon will play.
North Carolina, which finished 24-1 last year with its only loss to Santa Clara in the NCAA championship match, will visit Eugene on Sept. 29. The Ducks have strong ties to the North Carolina program. Steffen served as an assistant coach at North Carolina from 1993-95 and current Duck assistant coach Keri Raygor starred for the Tar Heels from 1991-94.
The Ducks' first Pac-10 opponent will be Washington on Oct. 11. Oregon completed its best season last year at 8-8-2 since adding women's soccer in 1996.
