Cal Baseball Defeats UCLA, 5-3
April 5, 2002
BERKELEY, CA - Behind the strong pitching of senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson and the hitting of freshman David Nicholson and sophomore Jeff Dragicevich, the Cal baseball team defeated UCLA, 5-3 in a Pac-10 game Friday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 21-14 and 4-3 in the conference, while UCLA falls to 13-18 and 0-1.
Hutchinson had another outstanding outing for Cal, improving his record to 7-3 by pitching 8.7 innings with six hits, three runs, three walks and six strikeouts. He now has 262 career strikeouts, third on the Bears all-time list and only 14 strikeouts short of the surpassing the school record 275 strikeouts by Doug Weiss from 1955-57. Sophomore Matt Brown earned his sixth save of the season after getting Casey Janssen to pop-out in foul territory to Cal first baseman Conor Jackson to end the game. It was Brown's 14th career save, tying him for fourth (Joe Buckley, 1986-89) on the Bears career save list.
Offensively Cal got its first run of the game in the second inning on an RBI single by freshman left fielder Justin Nelson off of UCLA starter Chris Cordeiro (1-4, 6.3 innings, eight hits, five runs, two walks, three strikeouts). The Bruins tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out by Adam Berry. The Bears countered with a solo home run by Nicholson in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-1 lead.
UCLA tied the game again in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Ben Francisco. Cal was able to take back control of the contest by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a throwing error by Bruin catcher Josh Arhart that allowed a run and RBI singles from junior catcher John Baker and Nicholson for a 5-2 lead.
UCLA got within 5-3 on a solo home run by Brandon Averill in the sixth inning, but the pitching of Hutchinson and Brown stopped any more Bruin runs. Cal shortstop Dragicevich finished the day 3-for-3 and Nicholson was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Cal hosts UCLA in the second game of the three-game conference series Saturday, Apr. 6 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
