Cougars Down ASU 7-4
April 5, 2002
Starter Eddie Bonine pitched a three-hit, three-run, nine-strikeout complete game Friday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field, as Washington State downed No. 15 Arizona State 7-4.
Bonine's (5-4) complete game was his second of the season. The Cougars' (13-16 overall, 1-3 in the Pac-10) offense also played a big role, notching 14 hits and chasing current National Pitcher of the Week Mike Esposito from the game after six innings. The Sun Devils fell to 20-12 overall and 4-3 in Pac-10 play.
'Eddie was the key to game,' WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. 'He was outstanding. He did a good job and kept his pitches down, which enabled him to such a great job.'
Offensively, the Cougars got a balanced effort from their lineup. Evan Hecker and Justin Hart each had three hits, while Wes Falkenborg, Jeff LaRue and Collin Henderson had two hit apiece. Hart, Falkenborg and Steve Mortimer each had two RBI.
'The offense had 14 hits and against a guy like Esposito,' Mooney said. 'That's when you tip your hat to your offense - when they do something like that against a 'somebody.' '
In the first inning, though, it didn't look like the Cougars' day. Two WSU errors enabled the Sun Devils to notch two runs without a hit. The Cougars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, when Hecker scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-1.
ASU struck again in the top of the third, when Steve Garrabrants scored on a fielder's choice and Jeremy West hit his ninth home run of the season, solo shot off Bonine, to give the Sun Devils a 4-2 lead.
The Cougars, however, would not go away. They touched up Esposito for four runs in the bottom of the third. Hart started the scoring deluge with a single down the right field line that plated Henderson. Falkenborg followed with a single that scored Hecker. LaRue scored Hart on an infield single to third base. Mortimer hit a drooping liner to left field that caused ASU leftfielder Rod Allen to make a diving catch, enabling Falkenborg to score and give WSU a 5-4 lead.
Bonine shutout the ASU lineup for the remaining six innings. WSU added runs in the seventh and eighth, when Mortimer singled home Tyson Boston and Hart singled to plate Henderson.
The two teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
