No. 38 Arizona State Defeats Men's Tennis 5-2

April 5, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 52-ranked University of Oregon men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 match Friday afternoon to No. 38-ranked Arizona State a at the Student Tennis Center.

Oregon dropped to 12-6 and 0-3 in the Pac-10 on the season while Arizona State improved to 9-7 and 2-2 in conference play.

'It was a winable match,' Oregon coach Chris Russell said. 'We squandered an opportunity in doubles.'

The Ducks' No. 1 doubles duo of Oded Teig and Sven Swinnen lost a close 9-8 match to Arizona State's Matt Klinger and Mitchell Bowen that helped set the table for the Sun Devils' victory.

Oregon's two points came from Swinnen, who won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and Chris King, who claimed a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 singles.

'We've gotten a lot of productivity out of (the bottom of our lineup),' said Russell, whose No. 5 player, Greg Dubourdieu, was edged by Arizona State's Olivier Charroin 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (7) in the final match.

The Ducks next play host Saturday to No. 69 Arizona at noon at 15th Street Varsity Courts. In case of inclement weather, the match will be held at the Student Tennis Center.

'There definitely has to be more discipline (against Arizona),' Russell said. 'In the Pac-10, you don't win without the detail and discipline.'
