OSU's Three-Game Win Streak Ends

April 5, 2002

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Oregon State's three-game winning streak came to an end with a 9-2 loss to Southern California in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Dedeaux Field. Seth Pietsch moved into a tie for eighth place on OSU's single-season leaders list in triples, hitting his fourth of the spring.

The Beavers (18-11 overall, 2-2 Pacific-10), who lost for just the fifth time in their last 19 games, and the Trojans (17-13, 4-0) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Oregon State fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Bill Peavey homered off Beaver starting pitcher Ben Rowe. Rowe, who lasted only until the third inning a week ago against Arizona, righted himself this time and allowed just one hit over the next four innings to keep OSU in the game.

The Beavers, going against preseason All-America pick Anthony Reyes, managed to get runners in scoring position in the early innings. But Reyes, in his finest outing since coming back from early-season elbow problems, stranded OSU runners at third base in the second inning, at second and third in the third inning, and at third in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, USC broke through again. Rowe gave up a three-run homer to Alberto Concepcion and Joey Metropoulos followed with a homer to center to make it 7-0.

With Reyes out of the game in the top of the seventh, the Beavers got on the scoreboard. Singles by Pietsch and Paul Richie put runners at first and second with two out, then Aaron Mathews slashed a double just inside third base to pull OSU within 7-2.

Tom Creighton then pushed a bunt single that moved Mathews to third, and the Beavers were inches away from drawing even closer. Will Hudson blooped the ball into short rightfield, but Trojan rightfielder Travis McAndrews raced in and caught the ball just above his shoetops to end the inning.

USC regained the momentum, though, nicking reliever Mike Ekstrom for a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was just the third time in Ekstrom's last 13 appearances that he's surrendered an earned run.

Ekstrom went 2 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks while striking out one. Rowe went 4 2/3 innings, and gave up seven runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two, but at one point retired seven straight Trojans.

Pietsch was 2-for-4 with his fourth triple of the season, Mathews was 2-for-4 with a double and Creighton was 2-for-4 for OSU.

Reyes, who had pitched a six-hit shutout against the Beavers to win 1-0 in the final game of the 2001 season, went five innings for his first win of the season, allowing three hits and walking one while striking out seven.
