Beavers Batter Southern California, 13-3

April 6, 2002

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Stephen Copeland and Ty Kline combined to pitch a five-hitter and every Oregon State starter had at least one hit as the Beavers took a 13-3 win over Southern California in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. OSU (19-11 overall, 3-2 Pac-10) won for the 15th time in its last 20 games as the Beavers had 17 hits against five USC pitchers.

'It's tough to win a Pac-10 game on the road, and to beat USC on the road is a big win for our ballclub,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Our hitters did a nice job of getting off on the right track. We talked about wanting to be the aggressors today, and we were.'

The three-game series is now even at a game each, with the final game between the Beavers and Trojans (17-14, 4-1) set for Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, 11 different Beavers delivered hits and eight Beavers drove in a run. Brian Barden was 4-for-5 with a double and Chris Biles, Seth Pietsch and Levi Webber had two hits each, Kerisi Reynolds, Pietsch, Will Hudson, Paul Richie and Aaron Mathews all drove in two runs each.

'I think we were a little psyched out by Anthony Reyes on Friday night,' OSU first baseman Andy Jarvis said of the All-America pick that the Trojans put on the mound to start the series. 'Today, we were just ready to com out and hitthe ball.'

Copeland turned in his second straight strong start to improve to 3-1 this season. He gave up a run on a bloop two-out double by the Trojans' Bill Peavey in the first inning, but OSU tied the game on Aaron Mathews' run-scoring single in the top of the second and then scored five times in the third for a 6-1 lead.

That cushion allowed Copeland to go after hitters, and the only scoring the Trojans would do in the final eight innings came on Michael Moon's two-run homer in the bottom of the third. Copeland allowed just two earned runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, walking one and striking out two.

'I've been doing a better job of throwing my fastball where I want,' Copeland said. 'You do that and get good defense behind you, and it helps a lot. If they don't hit a ball too hard, we're going to make the play every time.'

Kline came on after Matt Bonovich singled with one out in the sixth inning and promptly induced a double-play ball to end the inning, starting a string of nine straight hitters the junior righthander would retire. Kline's 3 2/3 innings earned him his first save, as he gave up just a two-out single in the ninth inning.

'Copeland and Kline were outstanding,' Casey said. 'Stephen did a great job of not letting things get away in the first inning when that one ball fell in (for the double), and he let our hitters get back to work before things got out of hand. Then Ty got us through the rest of the game without having to get further into our bullpen, and that could help us on Sunday.'

OSU's five-run third inning included five hits - four of them doubles - as the Beavers chased freshman lefthander Matt Chico. After Barden walked and J.R. Runyon doubled down the leftfield line, Pietsch drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single.

Webber added a double down the leftfield line to drive in another run, then Hudson poked a ball just over first base to drive in two more runs and make it 5-1. With two out, Reynolds added a double down the rightfield line off reliever Jon Williams to drive in the inning's final run.

Hanging onto a 6-3 lead, the Beavers then broke the game open in the top of the sixth with five more runs. Biles had a run-scoring triple and Pietsch and Andy Jarvis delivered RBI singles in the inning as OSU went in front 11-3. Oregon State closed the scoring in the top of the seventh on Richie's two-out single through the middle.
