Cougar Tennis Edged By No. 34 Arizona
April 6, 2002
Tucson, Ariz.--- The No. 28 Washington State women's tennis team lost a heart breaker to the No. 34 Arizona Wildcats 4-3 Saturday.
Senior Erica Perkins once again led the way for the Cougars. Perkins, ranked No 54, defeated Arizona's No. 13 Maja Mlakar 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Cougars Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez also posted victories in singles play.
'We lost the doubles point and that turned out to be crucial,' said Washington State Coach Cari Groce. 'We played well today but we just couldn't pull out the win. We competed in extreme weather conditions today and we just came out a little bit short against a good team.'
Martinez and Arias teamed up to win their doubles match as well. The Cougar combo beat Laresa Marino and Perrine Pernin 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
The victory dropped Washington State to 9-8 and 1-4 in the Pac-10. Arizona's win improved its record to 10-8 with a 3-5 mark in the Pac-10.
Washington State will compete at UCLA Friday (April 12) and at USC Saturday (April 13).
