No. 14 Softball Falls To No. 3 Stanford, 7-0
April 6, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball squad dropped its Saturday afternoon contest to No. 3 Stanford, 7-0.
The loss was the first for the Beavers in eight outings and first in Pac-10 play. Oregon State drops to 31-10 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal improves to 32-5 and 3-2 in conference action.
Stanford got things going early with a pair of runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three hits off of Oregon State starting pitcher Kristen Hunter.
Hunter continued to struggle from the mound in the second, hitting a batter and walking a pair before being relieved by Crystal Draper. Draper fanned Jessica Mendoza to get the Beavers out of the inning unscathed, but the Cardinal continued its attack in the middle innings.
Kira Ching belted a solo home run in the top of the third and Sarah Beeson's base-loaded double knocked in three runs in the fourth inning. Robin Walker's double to left center field knocked in Cassi Brangham to give Stanford the game's final run in the fifth inning.
Offensively Oregon State pounded 11 hits on the afternoon but left 14 runners stranded on base, including runners left on second and third in the first four innings.
'We had way too many scoring opportunities to leave the game without a run,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It's not that we played bad, it's just that we didn't play Pac-10 level softball and they did - they worked us every inning to score a run.'
Junior second baseman Brynnen Guthrie finished the afternoon, a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a double, while Shelly Prochaska was 2-for-2 for the Beavers. Clare Burnum went 1-fo-3 to extend her hitting streak to 10 games.
The Beavers and Cardinal finish the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
