No. 6 Golden Bears Defeat Oregon, 3-2
April 6, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - No. 6 California (36-12, 3-2 Pac-10) scored two runs in the opening frame and another in the top of the sixth to hold on to a 3-2 victory over Oregon (18-14, Pac-10 0-5) Saturday afternoon at Howe Field. The Golden Bears collected seven hits, but left five runners on base to keep things close.
After a Kaleo Eldredge foul out, junior Kristen Morley took a free pass. Senior Candace Harper singled to left center and Veronica Nelson walked to load the bases. Cal's RBI leader, junior Courtney Scott, then smashed a two-run double to left center for the early lead.
In the sixth, the Bears used three consecutive singles to start the inning, scoring a run. Harper led off with a single, followed by Nelson's base hit to right field. Scott collected her third RBI of the day as she slapped a hit up the middle.
The Ducks answered back in their half of the sixth inning as Amber Hutchison hit a two out single to center. Alyssa Laux then hit a towering homer to right field, her first of the season, o narrow the margin to one run. Senior Jocelyn Forest came in to pitch for junior Jen Deering (10-1), who went 5.2 innings, striking out five, walking none and giving up three hits for her 10th win of the season.
'I thought Jen Deering threw a good six innings and Jocelyn threw a good inning to finish it off,' said coach Diane Ninemire. 'Courtney's still doing a great job in pressure situations to come through for us.'
Forest went 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and her first save of the year. Scott duplicated her plate performance from Friday afternoon against Oregon State, going 2-for-3. Harper and freshman Jessica Pamanian also went 2-for-3 in the game.
'I've just been seeing the ball well and it seems as though my hits are falling,' said Scott, who leads the club with 35 RBI in 2002. 'The top of the order did a good job getting on base and I had the opportunity to bring those runs in.'
Cal has a rematch with Oregon tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Howe Field.
