Varsity Eight, Novice Eight Advance At San Diego Crew Classic

April 6, 2002

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- USC's Varsity Eight boat - last year's Crew Classic champion -- will not have the opportunity to defend its title this year after not qualifying for the grand final in the opening day of the 2002 San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay Saturday morning.

It was a disappointing day for the Trojans' top two boats. Racing in the Varsity Eights Heat 'B', USC finished fifth with a time of 6:58.94 to qualify for the Petite Finals but lost the oppotunity for a top-6 finish. Ohio State won the heat in 6:45.96, followed by California (6:47.91) and Notre Dame (6:51.60). The Trojans will face Oregon State, Texas, Clemson, Miami, Navy and Tulsa on Sunday to determine places 7-12.

Also hoping to make a second-straight appearance in the grand finals, USC's JV Eight was eliminated after crossing the finish line sixth (7:24.62) in its heat. Virginia, Ohio State, Washington, Clemson, Cal and Texas will compete in Sunday's grand final.

The highlight of the day for the Trojans was the unexpected performance of the Novice Eight who finished fourth (7:28.20) in their heat to advance to the Petite Finals. USC will face Stanford, Texas, San Diego State, San Diego and UC Irvine in Sunday's race to also determine places 7-12.
