Women's Gymnastics Misses NCAA Championships Berth By Fraction Of A Point

April 6, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - Although senior Laura Moon advanced in the all-around, Arizona State's women's gymnastics team came up 0.075 points short of an NCAA Championships berth, finishing third behind UCLA and Arizona at the NCAA South Central Regional at Wells Fargo Arena, Saturday night.

UCLA, the two-time defending national champions took first place with ease with a 197.425 meet total. Arizona placed second and grabbed the final NCAA qualifying spot at 194.950, while ASU came in third at 194.875. Brigham Young placed fourth at 194.000, Cal State Fullerton placed fifth at 192.000 and Illinois-Chicago took third at 191.925.

With Arizona on a bye in the final rotation, the Sun Devils went into uneven bars knowing that they needed to score above a 48.900 to claim second place. Junior Ashley Ellsberry and sophomore Carla DeMartini posted a pair of 9.7s to start the rotation, and junior Margaret Wojciak scored a 9.825. However, sophomore Maggie Germaine who had hit all 10 of her bar routines this season for no worse than a 9.75, suffered a fall that led to a 9.375. Freshman Kari Muth and Moon finished things off going 9.775 and 9.825, respectively, but it wasn't enough.

Moon, who last season earned second-team All-America honors in the all-around, will compete in her fourth NCAA Championships. As a freshman and sophomore at the University of Maryland she also qualified individually. Her junior campaign with the Sun Devils was the only time she qualified with a team.

Having missed all of January because of a knee injury, Moon had competed only on bars and balance beam this season until Saturday. Making her season debuts on vault and floor exercise she tallied respective scores of 9.625 and 9.8. On bars she and Wojciak led the team with 9.825s. Her balance beam routine earned a 9.65.

Cal State Fullerton's Kelly Mathiasen, who finished in third place in the all-around at 39.025, also qualified individually for the NCAA Championships.

This marks only the fifth time in school history that ASU failed to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet.
