Baseball Wins Series With 7-0 Shutout Against Oregon State

LOS ANGELES - Freshmen J.P. Howell and Brett Bannister allowed only seven hits in a combined shutout Sunday and the USC Trojans defeated the Oregon State Beavers, 7-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. With the win, the Trojans take two of three from the Beavers (9-2, 3-13, 7-0).
USC improves to 18-14 overall and 5-1 in Pac-10 play while Oregon State falls to 19-12 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10. The Trojans have now won six of their last seven games.
The Trojans scored in the first when center fielder Brian Barre walked and stole second. Freshman Joey Metropoulos hit a double to left, scoring Barre. Senior Bill Peavey singled to right, scoring Metropoulos for a 2-0 lead. Left fielder Michael Morales hit a two-out, two-run single to center with the bases loaded in the fourth to put the Trojans ahead, 4-0.
Peavey and Alberto Concepcion both went 3-for-4 for the Trojans with one RBI.
Bannister (3-2) recorded the win in relief with five innings, allowing three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Shortstop Michael Moon reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth and stole second and third base. He stole home on a delayed steal with Morales at first for a 6-0 lead. Concepcion added an RBI single in the seventh to complete the scoring.
The Trojans will travel to Cal State Fullerton for a non-conference game on Tuesday (April 9) at 7 p.m. before traveling to Stanford for a key Pac-10 series, beginning Friday (April 12) at 6 p.m. All four games this week will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
