April 7, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon softball team fell 7-0 to No. 6 California in front of 270 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Oregon falls to 18-15 overall, 0-6 Pacific-10 Conference and California improves to 37-12, 4-2.

'Cal is one of many great teams in the Pac-10 and today they did a great job with both their offense and their pitching,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'This is a tough conference and we just need to start focusing on the upcoming weekend.'

Oregon got a hit each from Lynsey Haij, Andrea Vidlund and Ashley Richards, but weren't able to move runners to scoring position. Defensively, Lindsey Kontra (5-7) took the loss for the Ducks.

The Bears took the lead in the top of the third inning after Kristen Bayless hit a double off the left field fence and advanced to third on an Oregon error. Lead off hitter Kaleo Eldredge then singled to score Bayless and give Cal the lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Cal struck again, scoring two more runs before adding four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Oregon travels to Portland State Wednesday for a double header before returning home next weekend, hosting No. 8 Arizona State Friday at 2 p.m. and No. 1 Arizona Saturday and Sunday.
