WSU Drops 22-4 Game To ASU
April 7, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State pounded out 12 hits, but it was not enough as the Cougars fell 22-4 to Arizona State's 21-hit attack Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
WSU (13-18 overall, 1-5 in the Pac-10) allowed 21 hits, eight by starter Garrett Alwert (2-2), who also allowed nine runs in 4 2/3 innings to receive the loss. Robbie McClellan (6-2) got the win for the Sun Devils (22-12, 6-3).
Offensively, the Cougars were led by Jeff LaRue's 3-for-4 day. LaRue hit his fourth home run of the season - a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning - to give WSU a 1-0 lead early. Justin Hart went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
ASU countered with three runs in the top of the third and added one run in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. The Cougars responded in their half of the fifth, notching three runs to close the deficit to 9-4.
Collin Henderson scored first during the rally, coming home on a Hart sacrifice fly. Bookie Gates followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Evan Hecker. LaRue then capped the inning with a double to right centerfield that brought home Wes Falkenborg.
The Cougars, who used five pitchers, could not hold off the Sun Devils bats, as ASU recorded two runs in the sixth, six in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Andre Ethier led the Sun Devils, going 3-for-4 with two home runs - a two-run blast in the third and a three-run shot in the eighth. Jeremy West went 3-for-6 and hit is 11th home run of the season - a two-run round-tripper in the sixth.
Next for WSU is a three-game set with cross-state rival Washington. The Cougars and Huskies will renew their rivalry on the diamond beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
