Washington Takes Commanding Lead at Western Intercollegiate

April 8, 2002

Santa Cruz, CA - Washington set a school record with a second round score of 270 to help take a commanding lead after the first 36 holes of the the 56th annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course.

The Huskies opened play with a first-round score of 276 and stand at 14-under 546 after the first two rounds. Washington has a 23-stroke lead over Oregon, in second place at 9-over 569.

Fresno State at 571, San Jose State at 572 and Kansas at 575 round out the top five teams in the 17-team field.

The Huskies were led by sophomore junior Conner Robbins, who shot rounds of 69 and 65 for a 6-under score of 134. Robbins is in second place, one stroke behind San Jose State's Issac Weintraub. Robbins' second round score was a personal best as a collegiate and just one stroke off of UW's single-round record. His 65 was the low round for the tournament.

Brock Mackenzie, who posted back-to-back rounds of 68 is third at 136. The Huskies' Derek Berg is fifth overall at 3-under 137 while John Robertson and Corey Prugh are tied for 17th at 3-over 143.

The Huskies enter Tuesday's final round with a chance to break the school record for a 54-hole tournament. If Washington shoots below 293, the Huskies will break the mark of 839 they set last fall at The Nelson.
