Women's Basketball Signs Tarika Campbell For 2002-03
April 10, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's basketball team has signed Tarika Campbell, a 5-8 guard from Long Beach, CA, to play for the Beavers in 2002-03, announced head coach Judy Spoelstra on Wednesday afternoon.
Campbell will come to OSU after graduating from Long Beach Wilson High School, where she played for head coach Paula Clear. Campbell sat out her senior season after tearing her ACL in a tournament during the summer of 2001, but was a two-time All-CIF South Section all-star.
'Tarika is an excellent scorer,' said Spoelstra. 'She is a slasher-ball handler that can play either the one or the two and has good quickness and good defensive ability.'
As a sophomore, Campbell was named an All-Moore League selection and helped her squad to the league championship. She earned Second Team All-Dream Team status as voted on by the Long Beach Press Telegram as a sophomore and earned first team accolades after her junior season. Campbell was named the 2001 Moore League MVP and earned All-L.A. Times recognition.
'Tarika Campbell is a phenomenal athlete,' said Clear. 'I think Oregon State is getting a steal, and Tarika will definitely excel at the next level.'
According to Clear, teams had backed away from recruiting Campbell after she injured her knee, but as of late teams such as New Mexico State and Kansas had shown renewed interest.
'Oregon State had been interested (in signing Tarika) since the ninth grade and Tarika wanted to remain loyal to them,' said Clear.
The Beavers are looking to add one more player in the late signing period.
