April 12, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team posted its second best 36-hole total of the season Friday and stands in a tie for sixth place after two rounds of the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational.
The Wildcats' 282-281=563 (-13) total was one shot shy of its season low after 36 holes and placed the team in a tie for sixth place with Oregon in the 16-team field. Arizona's season low of 562 came at its own PING-Arizona Intercollegiate on Feb. 4. Texas, working toward its second straight win in the state, leads the field by 11 strokes with a 547 (-29) total. Tournament-host Arizona State (558) is second and New Mexico and Oklahoma State (561) are tied for third.
Individually, Arizona was led Friday by junior Ricky Barnes and sophomore Andy Connell, who are both tied for 11th place at five-under 139 totals. Barnes' rounds of 70 and 69 were his first rounds under par in over a month, while Connell's tallies of 69 and 70 extend his string of consecutive sub-par rounds to four. All told, Arizona collected seven rounds at par or better from its five-man lineup. Arizona State's Pat Moore leads the field with a two-round total of 131 (-13).
Also competing for the Wildcats was sophomore Chris Nallen, who is tied for 17th place at 140 (-4), freshman Kipp Riehle, who is tied for 52nd place at 146 (+2) and junior Reid Hatley, who is tied for 68th at 148 (+4). Two UA freshman are also competing as individuals. Nick Juszczak is currently tied for 46th place at 145 (+1) and Nathan Lashley, who is tied for 82nd place at 152 (+8).
The 54-hole tournament concludes Saturday at Karsten Golf Course, a par 72, 7,027-yard layout.
